What is a walnut?

English walnut

Walnut is an eatable seed of juglan trees. Basically, walnuts are single seeded of fruits of a walnut tree. The walnut itself is contained in a green husk which is uneatable. As soon as walnuts seeds are harvested, their green husk is removed and walnut shells are taken out.

The shell is found in two pieces of hard halves equally placed around the kernel whose shape has significant resemblance to its outer shell. The walnut kernel itself is also wrapped by a brown seed coat made of antioxidants. The antioxidants preserves the kernel from atmosphere's oxygen and prevents it to become rotten.

There are two main types of walnuts; English walnuts and black walnuts. English walnuts are of Persian origin whereas Black walnuts are native to eastern north america. Both types have different characteristics. While black walnuts are of high flavor with richer protein nutrition, they are not commercially grown because of the difficulties of removing their husks.

Walnut is a type of vegetable which is rich source of nutrients primarily proteins and amino acids. According to the calculations, 100 grams of walnuts contains approximately 15 gr's of protein, about 65 gr's of fat and 6 gr's of dietary fiber.
